Sarah Kandrot (Phd Researcher, Department of Geography, University College Cork, Ireland) is talking about her research using Terrestrial Laser Scanner for monitoring changes in the morphology of sand dunes at Rossbeigh, Co. Kerry, Ireland. Filming and editing by Dr Max Kozachenko (Lecturer, Department of Geography and Coastal & Marine Research Centre, University College Cork, Ireland).
In November KCI purchased a RIEGL VZ-400 3D Terrestrial Laser Scanner. This portable surveying instrument can collect millions of data points within a 400 meter range in a matter of minutes. The scanner emits a light pulse outward towards a target surface and measures how long it takes for the beam to hit and return while spinning in a 360 degree pattern. The system calculates the beams horizontal and vertical angles and captures anywhere from 5 million to 45 million data points into a database called a point cloud. From each scan position a digital camera captures images which are used to color the scan points. The point cloud is then recorded into a 3D visualization program, and matched with the digital images to create a panoramic view. By taking multiple scans and using target traver...
This 3D VZ-Line Laser Scanner offers superior and unrivalled long range measurement performance of up to 4000 m reflectorlessly while still maintaining completely eye safe operation (Laser Class 1). RIEGL's unique V-Line technology is based on echo digitization and online waveform processing and is the key to enabling such extreme long range measurements. The VZ-4000 operates even in poor visibility and demanding multi target situations caused by dust, haze, rain, snow, etc. which are frequently found in difficult environments such as mine sites.

Using the Leica Geosystems terrestrial laser scanner, we've been producing digital elevation models of cattle ramps. By comparing these models across time, we hope to quantify the mass loss caused by cattle.
Shattuck St. Mary’s boarding school utilized laser scanning to revamp their outdated construction documents into 3D CAD format. The project was an excellent example of the value of terrestrial scanning. Using highly accurate 3D scan data generated with 3D scanning you are able to view as-built documentation in a virtual world. The point cloud data can also be surfaced to generate a CAD model which can be used for comparison or reconstruction. Focusing on automation and a smooth transition from the field to the office, RIEGL presents its 3D Scene Capture software RiSOLVE. Combined with RIEGL's VZ-Line of Terrestrial Laser Scanners, RiSOLVE provides a "one touch" solution for automatic registration, true-color processing and orthoplot generation. This new streamlined workflow with RIEGL's VZ-Line Scanners and RiSOLVE software establishes state-of-the-art true color 3D scene capture technology. Through proven performance of RIEGL's VZ-Line of scanners and smooth workflows in RiSOLVE, capturing complex 3D scenes is now amazingly simple.
