To showcase the outstanding qualities of the RIEGL VZ-400i for underground data acquisition of large areas, a special 3D laser scanning project was executed in summer 2017. Data of the famous Eisriesenwelt, a cave labyrinth with a total length of more than 40 kilometers in Werfen, Austria, was captured in 370 scan positions within two days. Only four hours were necessary for registration and post processing of the data. Based on RIEGL’s Waveform-LiDAR technology, additional scan data attributes are provided with each measurement. Using the reflectance value - for example - allows surface material detection and e.g. visualization of all surfaces covered with ice.

Shattuck St. Mary’s boarding school utilized laser scanning to revamp their outdated construction documents into 3D CAD format. The project was an excellent example of the value of terrestrial scanning. Using highly accurate 3D scan data generated with 3D scanning you are able to view as-built documentation in a virtual world. The point cloud data can also be surfaced to generate a CAD model which can be used for comparison or reconstruction. In November KCI purchased a RIEGL VZ-400 3D Terrestrial Laser Scanner. This portable surveying instrument can collect millions of data points within a 400 meter range in a matter of minutes. The scanner emits a light pulse outward towards a target surface and measures how long it takes for the beam to hit and return while spinning in a 360 degree pattern. The system calculates the beams horizontal and vertical angles and captures anywhere from 5 million to 45 million data points into a database called a point cloud. From each scan position a digital camera captures images which are used to color the scan points. This video clip has been generated from Terrestrial Laser Scanning data of some 150 - 200 year old trees (Abies Alba and Picea Abies) growing in a traditionally manged and privately owned "Plenterwald" forest in the Black Forest Mountain Range in Southwest Germany. Such a "Plenterwald" is an old sylvicultural forest management system based on individual tree selection. It is very close to nature and typical for privately owned farm forests in the Black Forest. Other Plenterwald forests are growing in Switzerland and Austria. The biggest tree, a White Fir (Abies Alba), is 45 m high and its stem has a diameter at breast height of 1.32 m (perimeter: 4.15 m), the estimated tree volume is about 25 cubic meters. Several eyewitnesses recorded high-quality videos in Kesennuma during the tsunami following the 2011 magnitude 9.0 earthquake in Japan, and Hermann Fritz and his group were able to extract the water speed from these videos. Fritz went to the location where the videos were formed, and scanned the camera's view using a terrestrial laser scanner (TLS). TLS forms a three dimensional picture of a scene as a series of points by shooting out laser light and recording its return time and intensity.
