    In November KCI purchased a RIEGL VZ-400 3D Terrestrial Laser Scanner. This portable surveying instrument can collect millions of data points within a 400 meter range in a matter of minutes. The scanner emits a light pulse outward towards a target surface and measures how long it takes for the beam to hit and return while spinning in a 360 degree pattern. The system calculates the beams horizontal and vertical angles and captures anywhere from 5 million to 45 million data points into a database called a point cloud. From each scan position a digital camera captures images which are used to color the scan points. The data was recorded in November 2013. All data is available in LAS format and can be used to locate each point in real world coordinates, measure distances, tree perimeters and volume, etc. with a cm accuracy. A short course last August at the Indiana University Judson Mead Geologic Field Station in Montana brought together 21 geoscience field instructors to learn about incorporating terrestrial laser scanning (TLS; sometimes called ground-based lidar) and structure from motion (SfM) photogrammetry into geoscience courses with field components. Both methods can be used to generate high-resolution, three-dimensional topographic models that can be applied to hazard assessment, geomorphic change detection, and stratigraphic sequence analysis, to cite a few examples. In this scene, meeting attendees were scanned from a single position by a Riegl VZ-1000 scanner. The entire scan took a few 10s of seconds and the laser was only on a given participant for seconds.
